Humanitarian quilt #2

“All about us there are many who are in need of help and who are deserving of rescue. Our mission in life, as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, must be a mission of saving. There are the homeless, the hungry, the destitute.”
President Gordon B. Hinckley, “Our Mission of Saving,” Ensign, Nov. 1991, 59
I volunteered to do another top to a Humanitarian Quilt. I just love doing them. Our ward is in charge of putting 8 quilts together. I have done 2 tops so far. This one was a double size. So 10x10 squares. It was much bigger than I thought.
I wanted to document the stages of putting it together so I have it in my history.

They come in bags like these. You just need thread.

I start by laying out the blocks so I see what I have to use. They come from donated fabric. So they tend to be a bit hodge podge. This one was actually not that bad.

As you can see I under estimated the size and ended up on the love seat.

Then when I am happy with the look of it I number the top rows.
1-10

Then those rows get stacked into their piles.

This is a bit out of order. But when you sew them you put them "face to face" so the side you like shows.

I stack my whole pile together.

Then a trick I learned was to sew rows 1-5 together. Then 6-10 together. Then you sew 5 and 6 together. It makes for MUCH less bulk on the work surface.

Me, not sewing my fingers!

What one row looks like. Plus Graden.

This is the finished product. It is the top only. My next adventure is to learn how to do the rest of the steps.

I am not sure where this quilt will end up. But it was sewn with love. And sweat. It was crazy hot on Saturday. ;)

Oh, so you're one of those women that make me feel so lame and untalented. Kudos to you! Now I will go hide in the corner and wish I could sew like the rest of you. :) It is beautiful.
